Organic Chemistry Question!?

We did a lab about Oxidation of Alcohols with Potium Permanganate. I need help trying to understand an equation. We first mixed 2 drops of 2-methyl-2-propanol with 2 mL of KMnO4. After slight shaking and a wait period of 10 minutes, there was no reaction noted. So next we added 3 drops HCl. Again, after shaking and a 10 minute wait period, there was still no reaction noted. So we then proceeded to add 2 drops of H2SO4. There was more shaking and a 5 minute wait, then there was sign of a reaction. Can someone help me with this equation/mechanism? I feel like I am going in the complete wrong direction. THANK YOU!!
