Vampire academy series, compared to twilight?

Twilight has this anticipation thing going for it. I realize that rose is probably waayy better than bella. but does VA have that thing where youre sitting at the edge of youre seat, scared for the characters, and the plot is as drawing as twilights? I havent read VA and im thinking about it, im not a crazy vampire fan or anything i just miss reading twilight for the first time
