Looking for a family dog for Christmas?

This is just so overwhelming picking a right dog for us. We don't have a lot of money so the dog would have to be low maintenance. I've a 10 year old son, who loves to play with the dog. We would also want a dog that is house and crate trained already. Now much of a barker or howler, medium size, that will enjoy snuggling, playing and walks.
